With Canadian Music Week in high gear, Markham's Jully Black added to the excitement by putting on a powerful and energetic performance in front of a packed house Tuesday evening at the Phoenix Concert Theatre in downtown Toronto.
For Black, who lived in Richmond Hill for 10 years prior to moving to her current home in Markham, performing during Music Week holds a special place in her heart.
Black explains that she first got discovered while performing during a Canadian Music Week event in the late 1990s.
"I was singing at a venue on Queen and Peter Street and there was a record executive from Warner Bros in from New York. As soon as I got off the stage, he asked me if I wrote those songs and I said 'yes' and the rest is history," Black recalled with a smile.
Over the years, the two-time Juno Award winner has performed alongside some of the biggest names in the music industry including Beyonce, Celine Dion, and Usher to name just a few; and has today earned the recognition by many as Canada's Queen of R n B.
Recently, she was asked to represent Toronto for this summer's Pan Am Games.
"Being on the Pan Am ambassador team is a huge honour," said Black, who will be performing at the various festivals leading up to and during the July Pan Am and Parapan Games, with host venues in Markham.
"This is big for our city with over 40 countries coming here, so it's great to be part of it," she added.
While she is excited and grateful about her role with the Games, Black was equally pleased and grateful for the reception she received from those in attendance Tuesday night at the Phoenix. "I'm just humbled at people's response and reaction," said the singer-songwriter. "Their energy during the concert was just amazing; I just feel so blessed and honoured."
